Hopkins Lloyd Community School provides after-school care for our students through COA Youth and Family Centers’ Community Learning Center (CLC) program. After-school care is provided from 2:10 p.m. when the school day ends until 6 p.m.
Children enjoy a meal, have fun, build character, get help with their homework and participate in other academic supports, all in a safe, nurturing and structured environment that is supervised by trained staff. Some of the activities our participants enjoy are:
- Comic Book Club – Our Comic Book Club members practice reading using comic books and graphic novels, and enjoy related activities including creating art projects centered around superheroes of their own creation.
- Mindfulness — Practicing mindfulness helps our first and second grade students learn to manage their bodies, feelings and emotions through activities that encourage relaxation, healthy eating habits, and working together to appreciate others who may be different from us.
- Creative Arts — Our students participate in creative art forms that allow them to express themselves and their own ideas, including multiple forms of dance such as praise, African dance forms, and hip-hop with help from our partners at Antonia’s 365 Hip-Hop Museum.
- STEM Learning — COA volunteers encourage our students to explore early STEM experiences, including creating play slime, bath salts, and simple robotics.
- Woodland Pattern — Since 1999, Woodland Pattern’s Youth Literary Arts Program has worked with Milwaukee Public Schools to bring year-round, multi-arts education to students who may not otherwise have access to it. Woodland Patterns offers a variety of courses and experiences with a strong focus in the literary arts to community youth, both at Woodland Pattern and in nearby schools.
There is no cost for the program, but students must be registered and parents or guardians must receive an orientation. Hopkins Lloyd is YoungStar rated and accepts Wisconsin Shares childcare (W2). Parents/Guardians are welcome to ask for help with the W2 process.
